In the spring of 2007, the assistant principal of Pharr Elementary encouraged me to apply for a full time 5th grade teaching position that was opening up for the 2007-2008 school year. I set up an interview with the principal, and the following day he offered me the job! I have been teaching ever since. It hasn’t always been easy, and I have taken many classes over the past several years to make sure that I am on top of the best practices being used in education today. Three years ago I took a 50 hour special education class along with the Elementary Education GACE test in order to have my teaching certificate renewed. In 2011-2012 I earned my Gifted Endorsement, which entailed 100 hours of classes and a whole lot of work outside of the classroom. I am in my 8th year of teaching and have been at Starling Elementary school since it opened in Grayson three years ago. I am blessed by my family, which includes my husband and two sons, ages 18 and 15, great friends and neighbors, and supportive and caring coworkers and administrators.
If anyone had told me 10 years ago that I would become a teacher, and that I would not only love teaching but love the kids in my class as well, I would have laughed out loud! But, I right now I can’t think of anyplace I would rather be.
